Rumah Baca is an initiative focused on enhancing early childhood education for the indigenous Orang Asli community in Royal Belum State Park. It supports children's literacy, learning, and development by providing educational resources and facilities, aiming to empower the community and foster growth in these vital areas.
Expansion and Continuity of the Toy Library Program
The Rumah Baca initiative evolved from Yayasan EMKAY's Toy Library program, which focused on early childhood education for Indigenous children in Royal Belum, specifically in Sg. Kejar and Sg. Tiang. Before the pandemic, the Toy Library prepared toddlers and preschoolers for formal education, serving as the only learning resource for those far from schools. Now expanded under Rumah Baca, the program includes new sites like Kg. Klewang, Kg. Hibol, and Kg. Tan Hain, extending its educational reach to more communities in Royal Belum.
Rumah Baca Kg. Klewang is a dedicated initiative within the broader Rumah Baca program, completed in February 2024 at a cost of approximately RM120,000, funded by the German Embassy in Malaysia. Built by Stewards of Environmentally-Aware Development (SEAD) over four months, the facility is designed to last 10-20 years. It has been handed over to the Orang Asli community of Kg. Klewang and PTNPk to manage early childhood education for the local indigenous population.
YBhg Dato' Fazwinna, Advisor of EMKAY and the Pulau Banding Foundation visited the facilities, accompanied by Zulfadhlan (PBF), Anis (YE), and BRR's General Manager, En. Zainuddin. During the visit to Kg. Klewang, YBhg Dato' Fazwinna provided food supplies, which were received by the Village Head, making the journey both productive and meaningful.
